London, 2018
In collaboration with Christopher Bailey for his final collection for Burberry during London Fashion Week, United Visual Artists presented, Our Time, the practice’s large-scale installation a meditation on our subjective experience of the passing of time.
For the show finale and to celebrate Bailey’s 17-year career at Burberry UVA staged the new work Spectrum, a 130-foot long archway created by 2,760 coloured laser diodes that describes a rainbow the above length of the catwalk.
In contrast to the monochromatic and melancholic feel of Our Time, Spectrum offered a sense of positivity and celebration of colour, recreating the effect of white light diffracted through a prism on an architectural scale.
Spectrum echoes the rainbow stripes that appeared across the collection, in sweatshirt graphics, knitwear, quilting, embroidery and directly references the rainbow colours of the LGBTQ+ community which Bailey featured prominently in his re-interpretation of Burberry’s famous check, paying tribute to strength and creativity through diversity.
