Beholder

London/Birmingham, 2018

Beholder continues United Visual Artists’ investigations into time perception and the relativity of our experiences. It centres around the wonder of everyday phenomena as seen through autistic perspectives, offering a particular interpretation of neurodivergent perceptions of beauty, recreated for the neurotypical viewer.

Beholder is a study of time through the observation of bird flight, referencing the work of early pioneers of multi-exposure experiments and photographic studies of motion by artists such as Eadweard Muybridge whose work in animal locomotion was motivated by a desire to understand things we can’t perceive.

Using VR and created in collaboration with high functioning autistic artists, rather than focus on the negative aspects of autism, Beholder celebrates some of the fascinating aspects of neurodivergent perceptions and experiences inviting us to re-evaluate our traditional perceptions of beauty.

Beholder was commissioned by BOM. It was exhibited at V&A Museum in September 2018 and at Birmingham Open Media gallery from October 4 to December 8 2018.
