Heliostat

London, 2015

CNC aluminium louvres, LED, brass, copper

780mm x 780mm x 1455mm

Part of a series of studies on the intersection of light, time and geometry, Heliostat acts as a timepiece that expresses the passing of time and cycles through the interaction of artificial light with the geometry of the cubic lattice.

Inspired by the behaviour of sunlight, shapes appear and disappear within the sculpture in which a sphere of light hovers encased in a grid of linear forms. Suspended from the ceiling by microwires, the artwork is comprised of layers of thin, white louvres held together by delicate brass rods. Strips of LEDs are integrated into the top of each layer and animate slowly.

Heliostat acts simultaneously as both a lens and a canvas, diffracting and diffusing light outwards across the reception’s interior and is also visible from the street by passers-by.

Heliostat is a permanent sculpture at Q2, 7 Air Street, London, W1.
