Inspired by fireflies battling manmade light pollution in our night’s sky Formation takes a closer look at the abstract concept of emergence. How the whole is not necessarily a sum of its parts; patterns form and dissolve, order arises from chaos, and vice versa. The work conveys the tensions between nature and fabrication, noise and signal.
A sliding grid of light sources suggests a swarm of fireflies. As their animated lights flicker and spark swinging in random patterns, the room comes alive with nature, albeit by syntheticised means through kinetics, light and sound.
Formation was commissioned by Artwise for Here Today, a major exhibition featuring works by Tracey Emin, Andy Warhol, Gavin Turk, Peter Blake, UDouglas Gordon, Julian Opie, Mariko Mori and Carsten Höller to mark 50 years of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species – an index of endangered species.
