Flux Paintings
London, 2017
Code, Custom Electronics, Thermochromic Paint, Aluminium. 118 × 90 × 5 cm
At first glance the viewer experiences a ghost-like presence inhabiting the canvas as the paintings appear to ‘self-paint’, seeing tones and shifting tones and depth of colour shift in front of them, as if the hand of the artist has been entirely removed. On closer inspection, emergent patterns reveal themselves, reminiscent of, but not wholly identifiable as textured forms or natural shapes resembling early cyanotype photographic exposures.
Each painting features an underlying grid of resistors which emits generative patterns of heat based on Simplex noise. These heat patterns are translated into textured forms by the custom thermochromic coat on each canvas.
Confronted with abstraction, the viewer is invited to consider their own apophenic vocabulary and to question the authenticity of their experience.
