Reinventing the Wheel

Reinventing the Wheel is a short film, produced in collaboration with VANDEYK Contemporary Cycles for NOWNESS.
Influenced by op-artists Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley as well as inspired by Steve Reich and John Cage’s phase experiments linking visual feedback and movement with sound, the film was made using the first production prototype of VANDEYK's newest bicycle.
A strip of LED attached to the bicycle wheel with each pixel differently animated, the wheel is mechanically driven and individual movements captured using stop motion to create a hypnotic vortex. The soundtrack incorporates audio effects from Purple Blast, VANDEYK’s limited collection release. As the revolutions accelerate the sound and visuals become increasingly frenetic before finally slowing down.
