UVA collaborated with Mira Calix to create a permanent installation in the Combe Down tunnel near the city of Bath. The former railway tunnel, now redeveloped by Sustrans as part the Two Tunnels Greenway, is part of a cycle route connecting Milford and Bath Queen Square.
The installation takes form as sculptural ‘sentinels’ resembling traditional locomotive reflector lamps. Together they form a unique spatial composition of light and sound as they react to the visitors presence. The elements are installed in 20 alcoves or ‘refuges’ which span the central third of the walking and cycling tunnel, guiding passengers on their journey.
Commissioned by Sustrans.
